Nun becomes 130th to self-immolate in occupied Tibet

(TibetanReview.net, Mar31, 2014) –A Tibetan Buddhist nun had set herself on fire in Bathang (Chinese: Batang) County of Kardze (Ganzi) Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on Mar 29, reported Radio Free Asia (Washington) Mar 29, citing an exile Tibetan MP at Dharamsala, India, with contacts in the area. The name and other details about the nun remains unknown as Chinese authorities imposed immediate clampdown in the area, including with blocking of all communication lines and restrictions on the local people’s movements.

The incident was reported to have taken place near Ba Choede Monastery at around 3:00pm. Fellow Tibetans doing their routine circumambulation of the monastery rushed to put out the flames and took her to hospital. Chinese officials and police arrived at the hospitals soon afterwards. They sealed the hospital and prevented the growing stream of Tibetans who were arriving there to look her up and enquired about her conditions from entering it. Even the nun’s family members were prevented from seeing her, the report said.

Also, the authorities imposed an immediate clampdown in the area, including on the monastery, cutting off all communication, including internet, links and curtailing the movement of local Tibetans.

It was not clear yet whether the nun belonged to the monastery or elsewhere. The incident brought to 130 the number of Tibetans in Tibet who had staged self-immolation protests against Chinese rule and policies since Feb 2009.
